One Photo, Three Edits {Project 52} http://www.emmacolbyphotography.com/blog/2013/9/one-photo-three-edits-project-52 This past weekend we had big plans to visit a "famous" farm out in Virginia. If you are interested in organic, pasture-raised meats and farm-to-table foods, then you may have heard about our family's favorite celebrity, Joel Salatin, and Polyface Farms. Simply put: he farms the way other farmers have forgotten how to farm. I could go on and on about how natural, how amazing, how much common sense it all makes... but for now I'll point you here and here and here

Anyhow, due to a number of circumstances, we had to cancel our trip. The silver lining was a trip to our local version of Polyface. We headed out to Meadow Haven Farm in Sheffield, IL for their Open House day! We had a fantastic time on the hayrack ride, feeding chickens, collecting eggs and just walking the land.

While we were there, I fell in love with these huge bales of hay. They were so big - maybe 7-8ft in diameter? And lined up one after another for half a block (okay, that's city talk now isn't it?) I took a few images but wanted to show you the amazing power of post processing editing. Here's (basically) the same image but processed three different ways.

My point is this: a digital photographer will do her upmost to get the image right in the camera, but the photo doesn't stop there. Post-processing can make a great image better, and it can make a so-so image fantastic. It's something to think about when you choose your family photographer...

The girls turn 3! http://www.emmacolbyphotography.com/blog/2013/5/the-girls-turn-3 We planned a little picnic in the park this past weekend for my favorite twin girls! They are about to turn three and I'm quite sure they couldn't be cuter. So happy, spirited & silly -- a pleasure to photograph and a joy to be around! It's twice the laughs and twice the fun with these sweet girls. Gosh, just looking at these pics makes me want to give them big hugs! Happy 3rd Birthday, S & E!

Stars Dance Academy 2013 Recital | SNEAK PEAK! http://www.emmacolbyphotography.com/blog/2013/5/stars-dance-recital-2013

What an amazing culmination for all the students and parents at Stars Dance Academy of Omaha, NE!  It was truly a celebration of another wonderful year of dance classes AND 10 years of Stars Dance Academy! Congratulations SDA on 10 wonderful years!

I spent the entire day photographing teeny ballerinas, tap dancing tweens, dynamic hip hop teens, acrobatic wonders and graceful senior line dancers -- and loved every single minute of it! I think I was smiling as big as the girls on stage -- and who can blame me?! Everyone of these kids is so joyful and so beautiful!!

Here's a sneak peak of some of the images from the day... There are so so many more to come! I can't wait to share ALL of them with you! Galleries and print ordering will be available in about two weeks, so stand by for the email announcement!

Unexpected {Project 52} http://www.emmacolbyphotography.com/blog/2013/5/unexpected-project-52 emma colby | chicago family photographer20130425_Project52_01 While at the park, J and I ran into an old friend from our playgroup! We haven't seen this little guy for over a year -- How very unexpected! He's just a few days older than J and it was great to see him again. Doesn't he have some gorgeous eyes?

On the technical side: I shot this image with a older lens of mine, a 70-300mm VR that I've been playing with lately. I'm itching to buy some new glass so I've been playing with what I do have to figure out what I want to keep and what to get next!

20130428_April_03 We had just finished up our pre-bedtime ritual and J & Dad were ready to head to bed to read some books. J somehow snuck up Dad's shirt and popped his head out the neck. It was hilarious -- and very unexpected! Never a dull moment when you've got a toddler in the house!

emc loves the earth http://www.emmacolbyphotography.com/blog/2013/4/earth-day-everyday emma colby photography loves the earth - chicago family photographer

Here are are few things that we do EVERYDAY as we strive to work toward a more sustainable business:

eco-friendly inks

not all print labs are created equal. i've researched and communicated with many different labs, learning about the processes each one uses. I then ordered samples from the top eco-friendly providers and conducted my own analysis to ensure the quality was top-notch. you will only get prints and products from the providers who passed my tests!

large prints are mounted on durable yet eco-friendly matboard

while a vast majority of photographers use foam or styrene as a kind of strengthener on the back of large prints, you won't find them here. why? styrene is considered toxicmutagenic, and possibly carcinogenic. my products are meant for your home - where your children live! more eco-friendly materials are available that provide long-lasting durability and I refuse to use any known toxic chemicals in the products you purchase from me.

albums use only natural glues made from recycled products

Adhesives, while invisible to your eyes, are very important to the product’s durability. It also influences whether or not the product is recyclable. the albums I offer use only natural glues, made from green by-products of other manufacturers’ waste. This also helps to avoid depleting natural resources since virgin raw materials are not used!

flash drives for digital files

every client receives a flash drive with the hi-res digital images from the photo session. this flash drive is 100% reusable! Once your photos are safely backed up (in multiple locations, including an online location, if possible) you can use the flash drive for your own personal use. most cd and dvds cannot be overwritten and over time, any writing or adhesive from labels on the disc will physically corrode the data.

recycled papers for all marketing materials

Every single paper item that comes from my printer, or my lab's printer, is printed on recycled paper. The goal is to lessen the burden on our natural resources.

cotton & bamboo paper fibers available for prints

looking for additional ways to make your print order environmentally friendly? fiber based papers made from cotton or sustainably grown bamboo are available. not only are they good for our limited resources, they look gorgeous too!

vegan options for albums

the albums i offer have vegan and earth friendly fabric options

Other efforts include reducing electricity and water use, recycling packaging and paper, & reusing anything and everything as much as possible.  All of this leads back to one of the core principles: Let the Sunshine to Give Back to the Earth.

emma colby photography encourages sustainable practices

without sacrificing style or quality

Magnolias! Another one of my favorite signs of spring. I love how early these arrive, and their short-lived appearance. Soon, the tree will turn from light pastels to bright greens. Stop to look at their delicate beauty on your next walk around the neighborhood.

These bright hyacinths caught my attention on a recent walk. I loved these purples with the pinks right behind. I almost didn't post this image though... If I were to make this photograph again, I would have done a few things differently! Among the changes: I wish I would have opened up my aperature a bit more to get more detail on the pink bunch in the background. But, I do like that your eye moves around the image quite a bit- those bright light pinks in the back draw your eye back and around again. It's not perfect, and I'm okay with that. That's why I take photographs every day! There's always something to learn!

Renewal {Project 52} http://www.emmacolbyphotography.com/blog/2013/4/fresh-project-52

Late last fall, my husband planted a few dozen tulips in our yard. They are my favorite flower, and always a sign that spring has truly sprung. Here, you can see the new beginnings of this young tulip. I love the rain drop in the center, and the deep dark color of the dirt, and the bokeh in the fore and background.

emma colby photography {project 52} chicago family photographer1304_untitled_0015

This week's theme: around the house. 1/200 at f/4.0, ISO

The Boy and I were playing one late afternoon, building tracks & taking trains downtown to tall buildings (where dad works, of course). The warm afternoon sun was shining in, and I love how those rays of light come through on the image. It felt just like this at the time. You can see the large rainbow hexagon lens flare from the f/4.0 aperature.

A play on the theme: NOT in the house

Aaaaah, who doesn't love a good rain puddle? This spring, Chicago has had plenty of rain. And we've had a great time splashing & stomping in puddles. The Boy had a blast! And I had fun playing with shutter speeds, getting just the right amount of freeze & motion.

{Project 52} http://www.emmacolbyphotography.com/blog/2013/4/project-52

As a photographer, I have my camera with me pretty much all the time. I take photographs every single day. So, I've decided to start sharing my images with you, my friends.

Each week, I focus on a new theme or prompt. These photographs are mostly of things and people around me, in my daily life. These images are not perfect, and that is not my goal. For me, {project 52} is about honing my existing skills and learning new ones. The images will receive minimal post-processing; I'm striving towards taking the best photo I can in-camera. I'm looking forward to sharing my journey and the new lessons it brings!

Keep an eye out for weekly postings under the {project 52} heading!
